OF CHEESE STEAKS AND POLITICIANS WITH CHEEZE WHIZ FOR BRAINS

I keep thinking I’m done posting on this issue, but our Prez just won’t let it go. I know I’m not that smart-is he really that dumb?

He makes it too easy!

By approving Attorney General Eric Holder' lawsuit against Arizona’s new immigration law, President Obama has set course into a political hurricane.

Mr. Holder filed suit saying the Arizona law preempts federal authority over immigration, although the law itself – which takes effect July 29 – repeatedly cites federal immigration law as its basis.

I wonder if Mr. Holder has gotten around to reading the bill yet? If not, he really must be that dumb!

I’ve said it in every post on this topic- anyone who has read the bill knows, SB1070 adopts the federal law. What federal authority is being preempted?

Although not included as a basis for the federal lawsuit, the main thrust of opposition to the law is that it allows police to ask more questions about people's immigration status based on "reasonable suspicion" that someone is in the country illegally.

Another repeat of a point made in a prior post- the police already have this authority implied. If someone’s rights are violated, either before or after July 29, the same recourses are available to them.

The lawsuit could drive a hard partisan divide into Obama’s immigration reform efforts.
Already, key Republicans such as Arizona’s two Republican US senators John McCain and Jon Kyl, who have supported reform in the past, have peeled off, putting Obama's recent push for comprehensive federal reform – including a partial amnesty for illegal immigrants – into question.

Polls show a vast partisan divide on both the law itself and the federal lawsuit – conservatives generally back Arizona and liberals back the White House. But Gallup reports that 50 percent of Americans overall oppose the Obama administration’s lawsuit and 33 percent support it.

And on the radio the other day, my boys from Philly showed they support it in a rally at Geno's steaks!

Atlanta Democratic consultant Drew Westen, who conducts both bipartisan polling and focus groups, says that while Arizona law supporters on the whole are frustrated with Washington's failure to take more action along the border, they also want some sort of amnesty for those who are already in the country, according to a story in the Arizona Republic.

"The president and the attorney general … are actually right in line with the American people who say that this is not a state issue, this is a federal issue, (and) it needs to be solved by the federal government," said Mr. Westen, author of "The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation."

Based on poll figures I have heard quoted, I am not sure I agree with that statement. And selling such a nuanced message in time for the November elections, however, may prove difficult, says former Republican White House staffer Ed Rodgers in a Washington Post reaction piece.

"In politics, a bumper sticker always beats an essay," wrote former Republican White House staffer Ed Rodgers in the Washington Post, "Arizona has a bumper sticker that is compelling and clear. It says, 'Do something about illegal immigration, now!' The Obama administration, on the other hand, offers a long-winded essay that only professors could love."

In a summer where he is losing poll points on virtually every issue, taking on another losing battle may not be the best move for a president who risks losing the House and Senate to the red party come November.
.
P.S The cheese steak really has nothing to do with the Senate Bill, or Mr. Holder's lawsuit. But there really was a rally from Geno's Steaks in South Philly, which I thought was cool since I spent many a late hour after the bars closed at Geno's (or Pat's
.
Plus, it does kind of make you hungry, huh?
.
How's this Mr. Holder? Arizona promises to give a cheese steak to everyone as we racially profile and prior to violating their civil rights. Now will you read the bill and go away?

  1. AMEN!

Let's see, did I find the words "Democratic consultant" and "Arizona Republic" in the above paragraph? Why yes, I DID!

Well then, pardon me, please, if I don't buy into that bit about supporters also wanting "some sort of amnesty".

It's an age-old political ploy of trying to attach what the Leftys want to what the people want and selling it in one big package. I ain't buyin'. Most of the people I know want the borders sealed AND want the lawbreakers currently here sent back South. Amnesty my A##!
